Special Educational Needs and Disability
Welcome to the Special Educational Needs and Disability Department at West Exe School. Our team is led by Karen Mellish, the Assistant Head for SEND and Student Transition Lead. She has almost eight years’ experience in Special Educational Needs and Disability and holds a Masters of Education Degree from the University of Bristol in Special Educational Needs. She is also an Associate Member of the British Dyslexia Association (AMBDA).
The SEND Department includes the Learning Support Team which is managed by Helen Green, the Assistant SENDCo and a committed team of Teaching Assistants and Mentors. In addition, there is the Positive Mental Health and Emotional Well-being Centre, known generically as ‘Phoenix’, which is run by Linda Brealey, Vicky Joslin and Sue Willey. In addition we have our own dedicated counsellor, Julie Hudson, who has her own discreet room on the ground floor.
West Exe School is an inclusive school and offers a range of provision to support students from Year 7 to Year 11, who experience difficulties with Communication and Interaction, Cognition and Learning, Social, Emotional and Mental Health problems, as well as Sensory and/or Physical needs.
