Our Trust of Schools

Science

‘Science knows no country, because knowledge belongs to humanity, and is the torch which illuminates the World.’

Louis Pasteur

Our KS3 Science curriculum is sequenced around the big ideas in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. A spiral learning journey has been created which enables students to regularly revisit key concepts and also expand their knowledge and understanding. The curriculum is intelligently sequenced over time so that these big ideas develop through the course and more challenging abstract content is saved until students are confident of prior knowledge. Students also develop their scientific working and problem-solving skills and are encouraged to critically question the facts they are presented with.

Students will be inspired to be curious about the world around them, develop a strong understanding of scientific concepts built upon key knowledge and skills, appreciate the value of science in their everyday lives and to make a positive impact in their community.

During Year 9 all students start studying the Edexcel combined science course, with the option of studying separate sciences in Year 10. Students take their GCSE science exams in the summer of Year 11. Students are also able to take part in a range of extra-curricular enrichment activities, including STEM and science experiment electives.

What makes us special

At West Exe school we have an incredible, passionate team with a wide range of experience teaching across all the science disciplines. Teachers bring this knowledge into their lessons by introducing real-life examples to support students to understand scientific concepts, helping every student to succeed.

"At West Exe School, science is like unlocking the secrets of the universe. The experiments are hands-on and mind-blowing.  Year 10 has been great. It is like a journey where I get to unravel the mysteries of the world through science. It's not just a subject; it's a exploration!"

How do we achieve this?

Each lesson begins with a retrieval starter task, of varying recency, designed to strengthen recall and develop well-connected scientific knowledge and skills. Students are regularly assessed through low stakes quizzes and feedback is provided promptly to allow effective re-teaching and ensure that every student knows where to improve.  Students develop their scientific skills by carrying out a range of practical experiments, that deepen their knowledge over time. To support students' learning we are really proud to have developed bespoke companion booklet and revision materials for every year group which help students.

The curriculum exposes students to differing cultures, addresses  misconceptions and invites students to think about real world problems and propose solutions

 Curriculum 5 Year Plan

Our Science curriculum is designed to allow students to develop an appreciation of the threshold concepts in Science Education whilst developing the skills to plan and perform safe experiments and think critically about data and ideas. Considering their own and others research, observations, and explanations regarding each one. It is a 5-year cyclical curriculum, with regular assessment and opportunities for feedback and improvement, resulting in either the Combined Science GCSE qualification or Separate Science GCSEs. The curriculum ensures that threshold concepts are introduced and built on prior to linked topics. This includes, energy, forces, cells, atoms, particles. In addition to this substantive knowledge, we concurrently build disciplinary knowledge by including a wide range of practical experiences for students alongside the theories and models of the science they are learning.

Success in Science

West Exe takes immense pride in the outstanding successes of our students who transition to Exeter College for A-level studies. Our graduates have excelled in both combined and separate science options, showcasing their dedication to academic excellence. The achievements of our students extend far beyond the local realm, with some securing coveted positions at prestigious institutions like Harvard University. Additionally, a number of our former students have embarked on journeys toward medical careers, entering esteemed medical schools and embodying the values of compassion and commitment instilled during their time at West Exe.

West Exe fosters an environment where every student is encouraged to explore, question, and excel in science, regardless of their background or prior experience. We take pride in the idea that science, as a field of study, holds limitless possibilities for everyone, reflecting the diverse perspectives and talents within our student body.

Assessment

Students are assessed through a variety of no stakes (daily starters), low stakes (topic tests to support mastery) and high stakes (end of cycle — informs attainment and progress).

Responsive teaching

  • Identify and address misconceptions
  • Identify students who need additional challenge or support
  • Determine next steps in teaching

Low-stakes assessment

  • Student feedback and improvement
  • Identify students who need additional challenge or support
  • Inform teaching
  • Motivate learners

Formal assessment

  • Exam past papers to develop students confidence
  • Robust student data for analysis and decision-making
  • Consolidation & revision

Knowledge Organisers

Knowledge organisers in KS3 focus on the disciplinary literacy of the subject. They include subject-specific vocabulary, and how it is used in context. Students then do a weekly multiple choice quiz to reinforce their key knowledge. KS4 knowledge organisers provide the key formulas that students must know and be able to apply in the exams.

Each year groups KO for all three cycle

Support and intervention

Every student completes weekly extended practice sessions in science which helps to develop students' knowledge and understanding of the key concepts. We are excited to be working closely with Sparx to develop a science quizzing program which is currently being trialled with years 9 to 11. The program employs a sophisticated adaptive learning algorithm that tailors quiz content based on individual students' needs and performance. This ensures that each student receives targeted questions that align with their current level of understanding. The algorithm adapts in real-time to the student's progress, offering a personalised learning journey.

Enrichment

At West Exe, our commitment to science education is exemplified through a range of engaging and specialised programs. Our science curriculum boasts cutting-edge initiatives such as STEM LEGO robots, providing students with hands-on experience in robotics and technology. Additionally, we offer enticing electives in microbiology, allowing students to explore the fascinating world of microscopic organisms. The introduction of forensics courses further enhances our science offerings, encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving skills. At the heart of our science education is the Reach Academy program, a STEM-centered initiative that goes beyond traditional learning. Through this program, students are exposed to immersive and interdisciplinary STEM experiences, fostering a deep appreciation for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. At West Exe, we are dedicated to providing a comprehensive and dynamic science education that prepares our students for a future driven by innovation and discovery.
